In the recent years, there had been an increased in the number of healthy and active seniors choosing to live independently. In fact, many people, especially those who are in their mid-fifties think that independent living is the best among the retirement options available for them to choose from. Thus, many of them take advantage of great independent living facilities like over 55 communities which house people aged fifty five and up.

There are three major community options for those aged fifty five and above. The first option is the senior apartments. Senior apartments are generally made for active senior citizens aged fifty five and up. The apartment units are arranged in a way that they have assistive facilities like pull cords and handrails. Some units are even converted into private homes. Retirement communities on the other hand can be the best option for those citizens aged fifty five and up who are no longer employed. More often than not, retirement communities are clusters of houses, rented or purchased, with thousands of residents.

Another community option for senior citizens is the low-income housing community, with apartments and living spaces sold or leased at very low rates that are subsidized by the government.
