To keep your family and your house safe from the possible dangers wood and pellet stoves may bring, you should be mindful of a few safety measures. First is proper maintenance. You should regularly clean your stove to avoid ashes and soot build up and clogging. At least once a year, it is advisable to have your stove cleaned or checked up by a professional to make sure it is in proper condition. Second is to always keep the flames under control, as making huge fire can be dangerous in addition to wasting wood. Next is making sure you use fire screens to shield your home and family from embers that may come out of the stove. Embers are fire hazards. Always keep your fire monitored. Do not leave your house with your stove running unattended by an adult. Children may be tempted to play with the fire inside your stove. If not supervised and prevented, they could get hurt.

It may sound ridiculous, but some people tend to put or burn other things in their wood stoves aside from wood. To avoid possible danger of setting a huge fire, burn only the approved materials for your stove. Don’t throw in old newspapers, or other things you might want to get rid of onto the fire. You are getting yourself into more danger than you thought.

In general, accident precautions are about storing away materials that can start a fire and fixing faulty electrical wirings. Children should not have any access to flammable material or electric plugs. Plastic fillers that are inserted in electric plugs and sockets will also be helpful in preventing children from inserting anything in the electric sockets.

Besides fire, sharp objects are also frequent cause of accidents at home. If there is a child or children in the house, store away the cutlery set in a sealed container and/or locate this in the hanging drawers instead of the pull out drawers below the sink. Also, never expose to the children the location of these sharp objects, hence, never ask them to look or get these things for you.
